BBC World News Live for iPhone

***IOS4.2.x update is now approved and live on the App Store. Please update your apps using the App Store > Updates option on your device to receive the patched version. ***

We've had a number of reports of problems connecting to BBC World News app on the iPhone. We have not yet been able to isolate this problem on our development devices, however these guidelines may assist.

We advise any customers who are experiencing this to ensure they have fully quit the BBC World News app from the task manager (double-tap the home button) and then restart. This will refresh the configuration information which may be the cause of the issue.

If this does not help fix the problem, we also recommend users clear their local web cache. To do this, go to your iPhone's Settings > Safari > Clear Cache option.

Additionally, try rebooting the handset which will cause a carrier disconnect, which may help to eliminate any upstream caching your mobile provider is performing on your behalf.

Finally, if all these steps fail, try reinstalling the app on your handset. To do this, connect your device to your computer, ensure all purchases are transferred to iTunes, then delete the app from your device (not from iTunes). To delete an app from your device, tap and hold the icon until it starts to wobble, then tap the X button. Delete the app and data when prompted. Now using iTunes, sync your applications again, ensuring the "Live" app with the BBC World News icon is checked.

Your subscription should not be affected by this reinstallation.

If you still cannot connect to the service, please do open a ticket with us, and if possible send your UDID from the device so that we can individually check your account. To send your UDID, download the free UDID sender app from the App Store, and follow the instructions.

Many thanks and apologies for any inconvenience.

For the last 4-5 days BBC World Live does not work on my iPHONE 4. It does work on my iPAD???

We been having s number of issues with BBC World Live, which we subscribe for and no issue at all with ALJAZEERA which is free? Figure this out.?

Also EURONEWS which worked very well in the iPHONE in September has disappeared at the end of the months and we have not seen it since than??? What seems to be the problem there?

BBC World live does not work on my iPhone 3GS with the new ios 4.2.1.

As pointed out by another user, Aljaseera work just fine.

How much longer for an app 4.2.1 compatible?

The update for iOS 4.2.x is now available. Please update using the App Store on your iPhone or iPad. We'll be amending user's credit today.

Sorry it took so long, Apple were particularly slow this time in getting the app approved.

The BBC World News and CNBC apps use a different codebase to the Al Jazeera / Al Arabiya apps which is why they were affected by the iOS update.

Regarding Euronews, this is not a channel we make available on iPhone through App Store apps. If you are not seeing this channel on your iPhone Safari browser then this is probably because your IP address that your phone provider uses is being detected as in a blocked country or not able to be geographically located. We are looking at using the iPhone geolocation API to determine country of origin which would be more accurate than geoIP detection.

We have just issued extended credit for all users who had credit on or after the 5th November 2010. If you feel that you have not received appropriate amount of credit for the time while the app was unavailable please do get in touch.

Thank you for your patience

I purchased the original BBC World News Live iPhone App back in November 2009.  No subscription was required to watch the live stream.  Now the App has stopped working.  Are you going to honour your original paying customers and update the original iPhone App so that it works again???  At present the version is stuck at 1.2.4

@Anon - I recently updated the 1.2.4 streaming urls so they should be working - this was an oversight when we changed the URLs for the streams a month or two back. Please let me know if 1.2.4 is working again?

Thanks

Unfortunately 1.2.4 still does not work. I have an iphone 3GS with 4.2.1 iOS installed. This is what I get.

"Could not retrieve channel information. Please check your network settings and try again."

@Anon - apologies it looks like the wrong permissions were applied to the file when it was updated. I believe it will work now (however I don't have 1.2.4 installed on my device to check right now). Let me know if that works better now.

Thanks again

@Joe Connor: thanks for fixing the permissions today. I can confirm that live streaming now works once more on version 1.2.4 on iPhone 4 running iOS 4.2.1 The icing on the cake now would be an update for the App icon and an update to take advantage of the iPhone 4 retina display! Thanks

Joe, in Canada (only in Canada, you say?) I believe that we cannot obtain the BBC News app with live streaming, while such apps as France24 and AJ work fine.  Apparently Steve Jobs does not like Apple products using some sort of plug-in (or whatever), I think offerred by Adobe [?], which it is claimed can damage something inside my MacBook Pro (Je ne sais quoi?).  Know you if this still be the case?

If others can build apps which run satisfactorally on my iPhone, and which, of course, are first vetted by Apple, then whats with the BBC?  The whole thing seems "much 'ado about F. A."

(No clever ending this time),

Hi Blake

Basically it all comes down to distribution rights. BBC [World News] is not available in USA, Canada or UK because the cable networks have either bought up rights to it but aren't showing it or because the content owners are unable to clear the rights for the shows, advertising or other portions of the broadcast. They can't risk cannibalising their revenue from cable buyers by distributing over the internet or mobile just yet.

It's got nothing to do with Apple or Livestation unfortunately.

The thing with Adobe Flash is more of a vendetta! One of the reasons Steve Jobs won't allow Flash on the iPhone because it is an application development platform which is not controllable (and therefore not monetisable) by Apple. It's the same reason there is no Java on Apple devices either. He does have a good point that Flash and Java are often misused or poorly designed, causing instability in the phone (something very apparent on many Android handsets), but you cannot 'damage' your Mac by running Adobe Flash plugin on it.

YouTube, Vimeo, Livestation and hundreds of other websites use flash to deliver rich media content (video, advertising, games etc) in a way that up until HTML5 was utterly impossible, or extremely convoluted through the browser. Flash may be running towards the end of its natural life (~10+ years to date) but it is still very appropriate for some specific jobs until HTML5 is fully adopted and standardised across browser platforms.

I did all the above, and all BBC services have vanished.

There are NO BBC services on my iPod Touch 4th Gen.

Is this progress?

I can see Euronews (in English) and others.

This app is a rip-off the BBC stream almost never works on the BBC World News Live app, which I've paid for. The apps' support link goes to a random BBC page. how this app made it to release is beyond belief.

I am not in the business of subscribing to services that don't deliver - I want a refund!

Hi Joe Connor,

I just installed it on my iPhone 4 with latest OS and it doesn't work at all. BBC English isn't available at all, and attempting to log on to Al Jazeera, RT, or Press Tv results only in a black screen with a white spinning wheel for three minutes and then it returns me to the home page. There are no instructions or help to be found.  Why doesn't this work at all?
